SEATTLE – The man accused of killing a Seattle police officer on Monday pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, attempted murder and arson charges.

The plea for Christopher Monfort was entered by his lawyer Monday in King County Superior Court in Seattle

Last Wednesday the 41-year-old was released from Harborview Medical Center and booked into the King County Jail.

Since his violent showdown with detectives last month, the only people who’ve seen Monfort are his family, police, and hospital personnel.

Monfort was shot on Nov. 6 as detectives trying to solve the Halloween murder of Seattle Police Officer Timothy Brenton attempted to inspect Monfort’s car.

Monfort’s family now says he is paralyzed from the waist down.

As this case prepares to enter the legal realm, prosecutors appear confident in the lengthy list of evidence collected when they searched Monfort’s Tukwila apartment.

Court documents show that officers found an arsenal of weapons stockpiled with ammunition and the ingredients to make pipe bombs, in addition to a gas mask and police scanner.

They also show Monfort’s Datsun 210 had one missing headlight and a bullet hole in the back that detectives say is from the shot Officer Brenton’s partner fired on the car as it fled.

“We’ve never seen anything like this. In our experience, criminal offenders generally try to avoid the police. This case is unique in that Monfort planned to deliberately confront police and kill as many officers as he could,” said King County Prosecutor Dan Satterburg.

Monfort is charged with aggravated first degree murder in the killing of Ofc. Timothy Brenton and attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of Brenton’s rookie partner, Ofc. Britt Sweeney.

Monfort is also charged with arson and attempted first-degree murder for a firebombing at a City of Seattle maintenance yard, in which Satterberg says Monfort was planning to kill police.

He also faces attempted first-degree murder for attempting to shoot an officer who was pursuing him the day he was arrested outside his Tukwila apartment.
