People are not working harder, longer ours, for less pay and much less recognition. The price of gas is not dropping anytime soon, and available credit is at an all time low.

Living in a large city like Seattle, rents are high, home prices are higher, and it just seems like everything is more expensive. This didn’t matter too much to many people a few short years ago, but few can argue they haven’t attempted to tighten their belts.

Previous to any economic crash, my family and I chose to live simpler, and here are 5 tips that we have followed. Not only have these choices saved us money, but have also given us a freedom we had yet to experience.

#1. Cut your commute time by moving closer to where you work – When my family chose to sell our home in 2006, it was based around moving closer to work, and cutting our commute time. Now we are both 3 blocks away from our places of employment.

Obviously this gives us more time, and as everyone knows, time is money. This time was not only created in our commute time to work, but also to the grocery store, to schools, to parks, and some of our favorite restaurants. This move gave us the ability to sell our most expensive, quickly decreasing asset. Our second car. Not only has it rid us of the maintenance and upkeep, but has given our budget some breathing room, slashing our $400.00 gasoline budget to $50.00.

#2. Just say no to debt – Get out of debt at all costs. Utilizing some free tips from daveramsey.com, we created the debt snowball necessary to quit paying interest to creditors. We can not start to live like no one else, so we can live like no one else.

Following our move in 2006, I lucked into his website, and followed his 7 baby steps which are free of charge and well explained. The tougher part was deciding we wanted to not owe anyone any money. This included student loan debt, credit card debt, and a home equity loan. Creating the suggested deb snowball and targeting your smallest debt allowed us to make some quick headway.

This allowed us to pay for my wife’s masters degree, with cash.

You can imagine that this can take some getting used to, but each time we received a quarterly statement, we felt like we had more freedom, and lesser responsibility to people we owed money to. Currently we are considering renting out a room to a nanny or au pere to help offset child care costs.

#4. Clip those coupons – As Granny as this may sound, I think clipping coupons are one of the best ways to pay less for everyday items. Once you become efficient at it, and realize the commonly bought items, this can cut as much as 90% from your bill.

The only problem I noticed was that much that is available via coupons seems like junk food that I would never normally buy. However, using a site like TheFrugalGirl.com and MoneySavingMom.com are great resources for excellent coupons on expensive cleaning products and bathroom accessories.

Other tips that are non-coupon related. Buy 100 rags for like $15.00 and use them instead of paper towers. Washing these rags can help you save hundreds of dollars a year, and still get the job done.

#5. Build a free standing garden – You may even have the space to have a garden, but many people living in a city do not. Using pots or boxes to plant vegetables can be a huge money saver, and better for your health.

This has even brought us closer with our neighbors, as many of our extra we deliver to them free of charge. Vegetables and fruit are a great gift!

Not only do we save a lot of money, but we actually have an idea where our food comes from.

We recently did a streamlined budget based on Dave Ramsey’s advice, and also looked if we would be better off moving to where property, food, and taxes would be cheaper.

With all of the changes we decided to make, it made no fiscal sense to make a move. Being in a large, metropolitan city has become affordable by making a few keen decisions, and dedicating ourselves to getting our of debt.

WHAT: This spring, Photo Center NW invites you to take part in the Second Annual Long Shot, a 24-hour community-wide photo marathon on Mayday (6pm Friday, April 30-6pm Saturday, May 1 to be precise!) where individuals and teams hit the streets to photograph a theme, cause, community, or non-profit of their choice.  Open to ALL levels and anyone who wants to participate.

Long Shot participants will dedicate one full 24-hour period, or a part of it, to exploring the city of Seattle (or their current location) and documenting their journey during that 24-hour period. You can shoot on your own, join a team, or keep in touch with other participating photographers at meet-up points throughout the 24 hours.

WHY: The basic premise of Long Shot is to celebrate photography and community and to seek pledges for your participation in the event.  Long Shot is a way to support making connections for you, build community, raise awareness for a cause (if you choose), express your inner artist, and to raise money for the Photo Center to continue to offer educational and outreach programs.

HOW: Register and then seek out family, friends, coworkers, and anyone else to pledge any amount that they can for your participation in the Long Shot event.

Long Shot event raises funds for the Photo Center NW in two ways: through pledges and sponsorships during the Long Shot shoot and through the Long Shot Exhibition where photographs from the Long Shot shoot will be up for sale!

You can ask for an hourly pledge (i.e. $1.00 for every hour you shoot) or you can ask for a flat rate (i.e. $24.00 no matter how many hours you participate). Then, invite everyone you know to the Longshot Exhibition to purchase photographs from the shoot! All proceeds benefit Photo Center NW.

Whether you shoot alone, or as part of a group, just a few dollars per hour can help us bring new tools to the Photo Center, keep our doors open to artists and students 7 days a week, and put on faculty, student, and alumni exhibitions.

Participants can begin the event with a team from here on Capitol Hill in Seattle, or start shooting from wherever they might be in the world. No matter where you start, at the end of the day you’ll have contributed images and energy to an important center for photographic art, education, and community.

Long Shot will culminate with the Long Shot Exhibition and Celebration on Friday, June 4.  All participants will be asked to submit a framed print which will be displayed at the Photo Center and sold as a fundraiser “ISO” (in support of) the Photo Center!

A time to heal, a time to pray, a time to celebrate and remember lives lost from the recent tragedy in Haiti.  Lucid Live Jazz Lounge is pleased to present L’ Union Fait La Force…Strength Through Unity Silent Art Auction, February 10, 2010 from 5:30-8:00, bidding 7:00-8:00 at Lucid Live Jazz Lounge.  This auction is a fundraiser to support the rebuilding of several hard hit communities in Haiti, but it’s also a celebration of resilience and unity. The event will feature a diverse lineup of Seattle based artists, and live jazz throughout the evening. No Cover or Ticket.

The story of David Pierre-Louis, Lucid Owner was recently reported by Katie Couric on CBS news. They followed David as he left Seattle in search of his Mother in Haiti only 3 days after the quake hit.  He has since held several fundraisers to support his goals to bring water filtration, and medical supplies back to those who need it most.

Following the auction, guests are invited to enjoy the vintage sounds of 1920s jazz with Miss Rose & Her Rhythm Percolators.
